In Our Own BackYard: How to Talk to Your Kids About Drugs

From: Wednesday 18 September 2019 at 06:00pm
To: Wednesday 18 September 2019 at 07:30pm

By 8th grade, 28% of adolescents have consumed alcohol, 15% have smoked cigarettes, and 16.5% have used marijuana.

In PA, 17.6% of youth age 12-17 say they’ve consumed alcohol in the past 30 days. 7.5% binged alcohol in the past two weeks and 1.4% drove while intoxicated.

1 in 15 PA Middle School students and 1 in 4 PA High School students have vaped in the past 30 days

50% of high school seniors do not think it's harmful to try crack or cocaine once or twice and 40% believe it's not harmful to use heroin once or twice.

In 2015, more than 770 teens aged 15 to 19 died of a drug overdose.

Teens who consistently learn about the risks of drugs from their parents are up to 50% less likely to use drugs than those who don't.

It can be a challenging conversation, but it is imperative that we talk to our kids about substance use. Parents and other caregivers have an incredibly important role to play. We need to start early and discuss it frequently.

Join us on September 18th as Dave Snyder, TrueNorth Student Assistance Program Drug & Alcohol Counselor and Supervisor, continues our In Our Own BackYard series with How to Talk to Your Kids About Drugs. The session will cover:

• When to approach the topic and how to discuss it with all age levels
• How to set boundaries and expectations
• Warning signs that your child has been drinking or using substances
• When and how to seek out help

This community session is FREE and open to the public.
