The York County Court of Common Pleas in early July will begin holding proceedings in the newly completed 5th floor of the York County Judicial Center.

To accommodate future growth, the 5th floor was left intentionally unfinished when the courthouse was constructed. The building opened in 2004.

With the Court in need of the additional space, the York County Board of Commissioners in 2014 approved a $7.1 million plan to complete the unfinished floor.

Renovations to complete the floor are complete and approximately $400,000* under budget. The floor now includes eight courtrooms/hearing rooms, judges' chambers and other rooms.

“Individuals involved in litigation, whether civil or criminal, deserve to have their cases heard in a timely manner,” said Commissioner Doug Hoke. “This project helps ensure our Court system can meet that goal by providing the space needed to handle the Court’s growing caseload.”

The fifth floor was designed specifically to accommodate the Court’s high volume of family law cases. As such, it features eight smaller courtrooms/hearing rooms instead of the six larger courtrooms present on the 6th and 7th floors of the building.

Four of the new courtrooms/hearing rooms will not be furnished or fitted with audio/visual equipment until needed for Court proceedings.
