York County Veterans Affairs Director Philip Palandro will step down June 1, the York County Board of Commissioners today announced.

Palandro, a former military police officer in the U.S Army, began his tenure as director of Veterans Affairs in December 2007.

The department’s primary responsibility is to serve as an independent advocate that assists local veterans and their families in securing benefits they’ve earned due to their military service.

York County during Palandro’s tenure has consistently ranked among the top Pennsylvania counties in benefits secured. It was fourth in 2014-2015, and has secured a total of $25.9 million for York County veterans over the last six fiscal years.

The department under Palandro also launched the Veterans In Need Fund, which uses donated funds to provide temporary assistance for veterans facing unforeseen financial difficulty. It is used when no other source of funding is available.

“We thank Phil for his service to the County and, most importantly, local veterans,” said York County Commissioner Chris Reilly. “It was clear throughout his tenure that Phil looked at his role as more than a job, but a continuation of his service to our country and its military veterans.”

Palandro said he decided to leave the County to spend more time with his family and pursue other career interests.

“I’ve truly enjoyed my time here and strongly believe in the mission of our agency,” Palandro said. “Thank you to the Board of Commissioners, the staff, our veterans and the community for your support.”
