A countywide stormwater authority is an idea being studied by the York County Planning Commission. If created, the authority would identify and tackle flood and pollution control projects along public waterways and property in York County.

It is important to keep in mind that this is a work in progress. Nothing has been decided.

As the county has grown, the amount of stormwater runoff from roads, buildings, and land has increased. As stormwater runoff has increased, so has the amount of sediment and chemical runoff – primarily nitrogen and phosphorus – into our local streams, the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay.

The problem of what stormwater has done to waterways, roads and infrastructure around the county is one that must be addressed.

Potential solutions to these problems have been discussed for many years and important conversations and research are continuing in search of possible solutions for how to improve local water quality and reduce flooding through better management of stormwater runoff.

A countywide stormwater authority would have to be created by the York County Commissioners. At this point, no action has been taken by the commissioners.

We encourage you to become informed on the issues and become part of the dialogue. The York County Planning Commission has already held three public meetings, but still welcomes comments from the public.
