The York County Commissioners took action to preserve the Strickler House, a historic farmhouse that sits on the same property as York County Prison on Concord Road in Springettsbury Township.

The commissioners approved a 99-year lease agreement with Historic York, Inc., at their last public meeting. Historic York will maintain the farmhouse and consider necessary upgrades. This agreement comes at no cost to the county.

The county spent several years looking for an alternative to demolishing the farmhouse built in the 1700s. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Multiple uses were considered, including the coroner’s office and additional county office space, but the required improvements were considered too costly for the county to pursue.

The prior Board of Commissioners, in October 2019, hired A.D. Marble and Company to facilitate the recordation process of the Strickler House. This nearly $14,000 project entailed archiving photographs and documentation of the building detailing its history and significance to York County.

“We are delighted that a plan has been established to preserve this historic farmhouse by putting it into the care of Historic York, a local asset that has allowed many of our county’s historic properties to remain part of our community,” said York County President Commissioner Julie Wheeler.
