The York County Commissioners on Wednesday approved a contract with Business Information Group to advance the county’s broadband expansion that will bring the internet to more York County homes and businesses.

Business Information Group, or BIG, will develop a plan for how to design and engineer nearly nine square miles of WIFI broadband to serve York City, West York, Northern York and the Hanover areas.

The total cost of the contract is $438,400, which will be funded by the county’s American Rescue Funds. BIG is based in York.

“This is the next step in bringing internet to people in York County who do not have it and more reliable internet to people who already have it,” said York County President Commissioner Julie Wheeler. "This important phase of the YoCo Fiber project will provide greater access and produce a considerable economic return for our county."

Broadband expansion was identified as a major community need during the pandemic. The county partnered with York County Economic Alliance to form the YoCo Fiber Task Force. This task force advised the county on implementation of the initial countywide broadband study that was completed using federal CARES Act funds.

In 2020, CARES funding supported the development of a 16-mile fiber optic installation along the Heritage Rail Trail. That project was completed earlier this year and has two active wireless antennae providing free and strong wireless signals. Those antennae are positioned at the Hanover Junction and Brillhart Station trailheads.
