Nixon Park is the only one of the eleven county parks that is set aside exclusively for environmental education.  The Park offers an outstanding environmental education experience for scouts of all ages.  With 187 acres, six miles of trails and a large nature center a wide variety of programs and experiences await civic organizations. You can utilize the park in several ways.  
 

HIKING AND EXPLORING:

If your group wants to use the property for hiking and exploring it is free and open to the public.  Groups of ten or more need to schedule an on own visit by calling the Nixon County Park Nature Center at 717-428-0356, so that staff can coordinate schedules of all the groups visiting the center.

NATURALIST LED HIKES:

Groups with 10 or more scouts can schedule a naturalist led hike at Nixon County Park Nature Center on almost any Saturday throughout the year. Scout leader(s) can call the nature center at 717-428-0356 to schedule a date, time, and topic to be covered during hike.  Programs usually last 1.5 hours, including a 1 hour outdoor program/hike and a half hour to explore the nature center.  Naturalist led hikes must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.  Hikes are provided free of charge for scouts living within York County.  A nominal fee of $2 per scout is charged for scouts living outside of York County.   

FALL PUBLIC SERVICE PROJECT DAYS:

Look for service projects like tree plantings, work days, and trash pick-ups in the fall calendar.  Call the park to register your group ahead of time.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS:

Look at the Events Calendar for public programs.  A wide variety of programs are offered throughout the year.  Groups of 10 or more must call to register for any public program.  Naturalists will be able to inform you if the structure and content level would be suitable for your scouts. Some programs require fees, others are free.

EAGLE AND GOLDEN SCOUT PROJECTS:

Many opportunities exist within the York County Parks for Eagle and Golden Scout Award projects. Projects become available on a "as need" basis.  Contact us for more information!
